“The Girl with the Peal Earring” is the most famous painting of Johannes Vermeer,
a 17th Century Dutch master and contemporary of Rembrandt. During this era, painters relied on colors that they could easily produce and most paintings of this period were rendered in dark earth colors (sienna, umber, browns). Vermeer was the exception. He was able to imbue his paintings with exquisite light and delicate colors.
Dr. Mercado has tried to recreate the feeling of Vermeer’s painting. Here is how it was done. First, the model was photographed and a drawing was made. Next, the finished drawing was transferred to the canvas and rendered in oils, utilizing the same color scheme that Vermeer used for his Masterpiece.
